Tournament Events

Team Debate

Teams of three debate motions related to A World Divided against teams from other schools and countries. The debate takes place in a modified World Schools style, three-on-three. The debate is open book.

In the Debate Showcase, the top-ranked individual debaters from different countries are formed into new teams that debate together in public, with audience participation.

At two and three day tournaments, the top debate teams may then face off in a Debate Championship. The style of the Debate Championship varies by tournament.

Each student may score up to 4,000 points in Debate.

Scholar's Bowl

Teams of three use clickers to answer questions together in a theater setting. All teams race to reach the highest score possible across all the different subject areas.

At two and three day tournaments, the top Bowl teams may then face off in the Sudden Death Round. The style of the Sudden Death Round varies by tournament.

Each team can score up to 10,000 points.

Writing

Each student prepares an argument on a topic related to the special theme.

Students may select from a variety of topics. Like Debate, Writing is open book.

Each student may score up to 2,000 points in Writing.

Scholar's Challenge

Each student takes an exam that covers all the subject areas.

The Scholar's Challenge allows the World Scholar's Cup to recognize students for individual achievement in the different subjects.

Students may choose to take all sections of the Challenge, or just the sections for which they feel most prepared.

Each student may score up to 4,000 points in the Scholar's Challenge.

  • Some shorter tournaments may omit Writing.
  • Teams may elect to participate in just one, two, or three of the events.
  • Individuals without teams ("floaters") may participate in the individual events.
